Vanuatu – from 2.5 hrs (Brisbane)

Vanuatu is the wreck diver’s dream destination — and it’s sitting right on Australia’s doorstep. The island of Santo is home to the legendary SS President Coolidge, one of the world’s most accessible and awe-inspiring dive wrecks, a 200-metre luxury liner turned troopship resting at diveable depths. Nearby, Million Dollar Point offers a truly surreal experience: mountains of US military equipment dumped into the ocean after WWII, now smothered in coral and teeming with life. Santo’s airport is in Luganville, and it can be accessed directly from Brisbane (< 3 hours) or Sydney (3.5 hours)

Over on Efate (fly to Port Vila), the Twin Bommies and the cathedral-like cavern aptly named The Cathedral deliver dramatic topography, while Mele Reef’s Anemone Gardens and Wrecks round out an incredibly diverse dive menu. A perfect tropical escape reachable from Brisbane in only 2.5 hours.

Solomon Islands – from 3.25 hrs (Brisbane)

If the Solomons aren’t already on your dive bucket list, they need to be. This is a destination for divers who want it all — history, topography, macro, pelagics, and technical challenges. The waters around Honiara and Tulagi are littered with WWII wrecks, remnants of some of the war’s most intense Pacific battles, now transformed into extraordinary artificial reefs.

The Twin Tunnels at Tulagi and the incredible Leru Cut in the Russell Islands are among the most unique dive experiences in the Pacific. Another direct flight from Brisbane gets you to Munda Airport in less than 3.5 hrs. From there, you’ll be able to visit Gizo, with iconic dives such as Grand Central Station, a pelagic-rich pinnacle that more than lives up to its name, plus the ghostly Tao Maru wreck. The Solomons remain refreshingly uncrowded — which means you often have these remarkable sites largely to yourself.

Tonga – from 4.5 hrs (Sydney)

Tonga plays by its own rules — and that’s a very good thing. Famous for its exceptional underwater visibility and dramatic underwater topography, the Kingdom of Tonga offers diving experiences you simply cannot replicate elsewhere. The Cathedral Cave on ‘Eua and Swallows Cave in Vava’u are the kind of sites that appear in dive magazines and then exceed all expectations in real life.

The Pelagic Pinnacle at Vava’u and the Arch of Ofalanga in Ha’apai round out a stunning roster of sites. And then there’s the headline act: from July to October, Tonga is one of the only places in the world where you can legally and ethically swim with Humpback whales — mothers, calves, and escorts. Fiji- from 3.5 hrs (Brisbane)

Fiji has long been crowned the Soft Coral Capital of the World — and one dive in Bligh Water will tell you exactly why. The sheer density and colour of the coral here is genuinely jaw-dropping. Timor-Leste – only 1.5 hrs (Darwin)

The closest destination on this list — and arguably the most underrated in the diving world. Just 90 minutes from Darwin, Timor-Leste is a remarkable frontier destination with extraordinary marine biodiversity and virtually no crowds. The Dili coast is a shore diver’s paradise, with sites like Anemone City at Lone Tree and the legendary night dives at Dili Rock all accessible without even boarding a boat.

Dugong sightings are a genuine possibility here, as are encounters with resident pods of whales and dolphins on your way to the dive site — before you’ve even hit the water. The real showstopper, though, is Atauro Island, whose dramatic walls, pristine corals and extraordinary biodiversity have made it one of the most talked-about new destinations in the Indo-Pacific. October and November also bring a rare bonus: pygmy blue whale and sperm whale migrations through these waters. This is a destination on the rise — get there before the world catches on.

Papua New Guinea – from1.5 hrs (Cairns)

If there’s one destination that refuses to be pinned down to a single diving style, it’s Papua New Guinea. PNG is the rare place where a single trip can take you from heart-pounding pelagic action to painstaking macro photography, from vibrant coral gardens to hauntingly beautiful WWII wrecks — and the closest entry point is just 90 minutes from Cairns.

Kavieng in New Ireland is the stuff of legend for pelagic divers — the Albatross Passage delivers sharks, schooling fish and open-water adrenaline in spades. Further west, Kimbe Bay in West New Britain is a marine biodiversity hotspot of global significance, its seamounts hosting extraordinary concentrations of soft coral, pelagics and reef life. The Witu Islands and Father’s Reefs nearby add even more to an already stacked region.

On the opposite coast, Tufi offers some of PNG’s most dramatic fjord-framed topography and offshore reef diving, while Milne Bay in the southeast keeps everyone happy with a manta ray cleaning station, and the ability to dive on the most colourful and healthy coral reefs to sandy floors teeming with nudibranchs, pygmy seahorses, and amazing critters in the blink of an eye. And threading through it all? WWII wrecks scattered across the country, each with its own story and its own extraordinary marine life.
