Myanmar (Burma)

Myanmar (Burma) Dive Guide

Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, is a captivating Southeast Asian nation bordered by Thailand, Laos, China, India, and Bangladesh. Its diverse landscapes range from the Himalayan foothills to the pristine beaches along the Andaman Sea. The country’s rich tapestry of cultures, influenced by centuries of Buddhist traditions and colonial history, offers travellers a unique blend of ancient temples, bustling markets, and serene countryside.

For diving enthusiasts, Myanmar’s appeal lies in its untouched marine environments. The Mergui Archipelago, comprising over 800 islands, remains one of the last frontiers of Southeast Asian diving. Its remote location has preserved vibrant coral reefs, diverse marine life, and crystal-clear waters, making it an ideal destination for those seeking unspoiled underwater adventures.

What Makes Myanmar (Burma) Good for Scuba Diving?

Myanmar’s diving is concentrated in the Mergui Archipelago, a vast stretch of over 800 islands in the remote southern reaches of the Andaman Sea. Until recently off-limits to most travellers, this secluded region remains largely unexplored and unspoiled—making it a dream destination for adventurous divers seeking pristine marine environments.

What makes diving in Myanmar exceptional is its combination of dramatic underwater topography, thriving coral reefs, and incredible biodiversity. Divers can explore granite pinnacles draped in colourful soft corals, tunnels and caverns such as those at Shark Cave, and walls teeming with both macro critters and large pelagics. You may encounter manta rays, whale sharks, barracudas, and reef sharks, as well as a vibrant cast of nudibranchs, frogfish, and seahorses. Visibility is generally excellent, ranging from 15 to 30 metres, particularly in the dry season.

Because of the region’s remoteness and limited tourism infrastructure, the best and safest way to dive Myanmar is via liveaboard. These trips allow access to the archipelago’s farthest and richest sites, often with no other dive boats in sight—offering a truly wild, frontier-style diving experience rarely found elsewhere in Southeast Asia.
