Discover Pohnpei in 2026

Can you imagine a dive destination with near-daily manta ray sightings and untouched reef walls? A place where it is more likely to find sharks than to find other dive groups? If this sounds like your dream dive holiday, this blog post is for you.

The remote tropical island of Pohnpei is a hidden gem in the heart of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) — a nation composed of more than 600 islands scattered across the western Pacific that form four island states: Pohnpei, Kosrae, Chuuk and Yap.

Known locally as the Garden Island for its lush rainforest, towering waterfalls, and nutrient-rich waters, Pohnpei also boasts some of the most pristine coral reefs and thrilling ocean environments in Micronesia. Its reefs teeming with life, dramatic passes, and visiting manta rays make it a dream destination for adventurous scuba divers seeking uncrowded waters and world-class encounters.

Getting There: From Australia & New Zealand to Pohnpei

Reaching Pohnpei is part of the adventure — its remote location means flights typically require at least two or three stopovers.

From Australia

  • Nauru Airlines probably offers the easiest way to reach this destination from Australia. Weekly flights from Brisbane to Pohnpei International Airport (PNI) connect via Nauru, Tarawa and Majuro before onward service to Pohnpei.
  • Typical flight times, including layovers from Brisbane, take 13 hours depating Brisbane on Thursday evening, arriving Pohnpei on Friday and returning from Pohnpei to Brisbane on Saturday.
  • United Airlines and Philippine Airlines offer alternative services from major Australian airports to Pohnpei (through Guam or Manila, respectively). These options normally involve longer travel time and/or overnight stays in transit destinations.

From New Zealand

  • Auckland or Christchurch travellers usually fly via Pacific hubs such as Nadi (Fiji) or Tarawa/Majuro before connecting on to Pohnpei, with combinations of Air New Zealand, Fiji Airways and Nauru Airlines operating segments. Estimated round-trip pricing can vary widely, depending on routing, dates and layovers.
