The Southern Atolls, also known as the Deep South, is a lesser explored region for scuba diving in the Maldives. Known for its wilder location with deeper dives, stronger currents and epic encounters with large pelagics, the Southern Atolls is fast gaining a reputation as the best shark diving location in the Maldives. In addition, superb visibility, consistently warm waters, unspoilt hard coral gardens along with abundant majestic marine encounters makes this region an enticing draw card for more experienced, advanced divers.
Made up of a collection of atolls including Laamu, Huvadhoo, Fuvahmulah and Addu, the islands here are far from the crowds of the Central Atolls. Liveaboards access the Deep South from January to April. For a year-round cultural dive experience, dive centres and small hotels and guesthouses operate on some locally inhabited islands and there are a few luxurious Maldivian resort islands that also offer scuba diving.

Divers and snorkelers can explore Laamu’s untouched reefs and channels. Reef sharks, turtles, rays, and colourful corals thrive in the crystal-clear waters. Guided trips are offered to vibrant coral gardens and marine-rich sites including Mundoo Kandu, a spectacular channel located right in front of the resort. October to April is the ideal travel season for divers. The dry season brings calmer seas — perfect for diving, snorkeling and island exploration.
