Picture a small private island with a white sandy beach, tall palm trees, beautiful flowers, magnificent sunsets and traditional bungalows. Surrounding this beautiful adults-only hideaway (minimum guest age is 12 years), are some of the most colourful reefs and excellent fish life. Kavieng is renowned for its current-swept passages that attract a variety of big fish action. Visibility is often between 20 - 40 metres, with water temperatures around 29°C. Drift dive along reef walls covered in fans, sponges and brightly coloured hard corals. The walls drop away to great depths and provide the perfect hiding place for small critters like the Pygmy Seahorse and nudibranchs. Several WWII wrecks lay scattered in and around Kavieng Harbour. These include a Japanese merchant ship and many floatplanes. Albatross Passage is a favourite dive site for it's big fish and reef shark action. Enjoy a long bottom time on Lissenung's fabulous house reef or venture out for a night dive. // NEW HANOVER WRECK COMBO includes 2 nights in a Guest House off the North Coast of New Hanover diving the wreck of Sanko Maru with her accompanying Midget Submarine and other rarely dived wrecks.

    Destination Information

    Kavieng

Kavieng is at the northern tip of New Ireland. New Ireland, it is 360 km long and not even 10km wide in some places. It’s the second-largest of Papua New Guinea’s outer islands and acts as the eastern barrier for the Bismarck Sea. A range of extremely rugged and steep mountains, reaching an elevation of six thousand feet, runs down the centre of the island. The scenery is stunning and contrasting – low lying coral islands surrounded by golden beaches and pretty, clear springs, flowing rivers, fringing reefs and mountainous islands which drop sharply into the sea.

Kavieng is the provincial capital and administrative centre of New Ireland Province. Kavieng and the surrounding area offers a range of accommodation, beautiful beaches and excellent reef and wreck diving. The road linking north to south is made from crushed coral and travel is easier by boat. Local Malangan culture in the northern and central part of the island is unique within the Pacific; this culture finds its beliefs in a social organisation according to kinship.

During WWII, Kavieng was at the front line of the Japanese’ southward advance and many of New Ireland’s towns, infrastructure and industry were destroyed. The area is littered with silent reminders of those days gone by both above and under the water.

New Ireland and its outer islands is an escapists dream. Relax Kavieng style and go surfing, snorkelling or diving. Then tuck into delicious seafood including coconut crabs, crayfish, reef fish and shellfish. You’re sure to feel rested and recuperated after some time in this South Pacific paradise.

    Lissenung Island Resort

Imagine a small, private, tropical island with a white sandy beach, tall palm trees and magnificent sunsets surrounded by some of the world’s best coral reefs. This is the picturesque hideaway that is Lisseunung Island, located just a 20-minute boat ride from Kavieng, the capital of New Ireland Province.

Other than a handful of local staff, you won’t see another soul, and can easily circumnavigate the island in 10 – 15 minutes. Lissenung Island Resort opened in 1996 and remains all there is on the island. Eight ocean-front rooms housed in four duplex bungalows, furnished with hardwood floors and spacious verandahs, are spread out over the island. The bungalows are fully screened, have ceiling fans, mosquito nets and offer comfortable patio seating areas.

There is 24 hour electricity supply, with hot water on demand. Most rooms come with an ensuite bathroom. The main house, or “haus win”, offers comfortable chairs on a sandy floor and it is here where cold drinks and delicious meals await you. Fresh seafood such as fish, crabs and lobster (crayfish) feature high on a daily-changing menu. Beer and wine are available at the resort, but feel free to bring spirits from the duty-free store as they are often unavailable in Papua New Guinea. The eco-friendly buildings are all built in the traditional style, with thatched roofs and walls made from woven bamboo, blending seamlessly in with their surroundings. Local artefacts complete the picture and give the buildings a great Papua New Guinea atmosphere.

Lissenung Island Resort is a dedicated dive resort with it’s own fully equipped dive centre and dive boats offering up to 3 boat dives a day plus complimentary shore dives on the fabulous house reef. Diving in the Kavieng area has it all: pelagic fish and shark action, currents, wall and muck diving, wrecks and beautiful reefs. Lissenung caters for guests 12 years and over.
