This remote corner of the Solomon Islands is the perfect getaway for those looking to explore a destination less travelled by others. Munda is a peaceful, laid-back haven, and provides visitors with an insight into the life of a Solomon Islander. You will find a quaint community of shops around the airport. But don’t expect a bustling high street! This small village is tranquil apart from on Friday, which is market day.
This island paradise sits between two converging lagoon systems. These lagoons are dotted with sandbanks, small islands and of course flourishing coral gardens. Its remote location means minimal human impact and subsequently flourishing ecosystems for you to enjoy.
If you’re after a destination off the beaten track, where you can relax on island time at the edge of stunning turquoise waters, then look no further.
When you land in Munda, you only have a short three-minute walk to Agnes Gateway Hotel. The property is situated right on the waterfront with stunning views out over Roviana Lagoon. The original Lodge was started by Agnes Kera who, for nearly 30 years, had been the cook and custodian of the original British Solomons Government Resthouse, the building which is now known as the Orchid Wing. Following Agnes’ retirement, her family continued the Anglo-Solomon hospitality traditions.
Agnes Lodge is still a 100% Solomon Islands owned lodging and is now a hotel with 38 rooms, located in several wings and catering for a range of budgets. Room types range from backpacker and budget rooms with shared facilities to air conditioned rooms and cottages with private ensuite. The restaurant specialises in locally caught seafood dishes and the Munda Bar is a wonderful place to meet other travellers and watch the sunset over the lagoon.
Other on-site services include Dive Munda with its qualified staff of instructors and dive masters, and Go West Tours with its fleet of boats and canoes to take you anywhere throughout the New Georgia group of islands. Not only is Agnes Gateway Lodge local in most of its ways, you will be staying very close to adjacent local villages where you can observe traditional Solomon Islands life and become involved in the local culture.
Dive Munda is a multi-award-winning SSI Instructor Training/Certifying and Technical Dive Centre in the Western province of Solomon Islands. It is committed to sustainable dive eco-tourism as an SSI Blue Oceans dive resort.
