Whale Migration Season

Timor-Leste offers the adventurous diver the opportunity to explore the unexplored. The diving is world class with kilometres of majestic walls dropping off into the deep blue sea, acres of untouched reefs and an abundance of marine life. Here you’ll have a chance to see everything from interesting critters like frogfish and ghost pipefish to humphead parrotfish and endangered dugongs. Dolphins, pilot and melon-headed whales call these waters home. Migrating whales are also seen around these waters. The height of the whale migration season is generally mid-October to November for the best opportunity to possibly see pygmy blue whales and sperm whales as they pass through the Ombai - Wetar Strait. Discover for yourself East Timor’s beautiful deserted beaches, unspoilt scuba diving, spectacular landscapes and rich history.

Díli Information

Díli is the capital city of Timor Leste and lies on the north coast of the country. Its crescent-shaped beach stretches between the airport and Díli’s most famous landmark, the Cristo Rei statue, perched on Cape Fatucama.

Adventurers who take the time to climb to the peak of Cape Fatucama will be treated to the most spectacular views the city has to offer. Gaze out across the ocean to Ataúro Island or marvel at the city sprawling towards rolling hills extending to the centre of the island.

Ataúro Island lies to the north of the city and has its seat alongside one of the deepest ocean channels in Asia.

Take a stroll down the waterfront and stop off at one of the many bars and restaurants to watch the sun put on a magnificent display as it falls below the horizon.

Dive Timor Lorosae

Dive Timor Resort provides modern, affordable, comfortable and clean accommodation within a short taxi ride from the centre of Dili. The property is located right across the road from the ocean, close to a variety of local and international restaurants and bars. Guests can stay in one of the two Guest Houses each containing three bedrooms with shared bathroom facilities and lounge areas, a communal kitchen and courtyard dining area with dedicated wash tanks for camera equipment. Each Guest House can also be rented as an entire private villa. For more privacy, the four Deluxe Studio Apartments overlooking the pool contain an ensuite bathroom, kitchen, lounge/dining area and small courtyard. Backpacker facilities are also available.

Castaway Bar and Restaurant, one of East Timor’s busiest establishments, is on-site making this a popular choice for both tourists and expats.

Dive Timor Lorosae, Timor’s premier PADI 5 Star Instructor Development Dive Centre, is also located on the premises. Dive Timor Lorosae was established in 2000 and is the oldest existing dive shop in Timor Leste. The dive centre eminates a spirit of adventure and exploration. Most dive sites in Timor Leste were discovered, explored and named by Dive Timor Lorosae! Promoting sustainable tourism and educating the local staff is an important function of the dive centre. Shore dives around Dili’s coastline from quiet and deserted beaches, boat dives further afield off the coast and out to Atauro Island, snorkelling and whale watching trips, dive courses and Nitrox fills are offered by this full service dive centre. Whales can often be spotted migrating past the coastline in October and November. Dolphins are also frequently sighted.
