Espiritu Santo (commonly known as ‘Santo’) is arguably one of the most well-known dive destinations in the South Pacific. Not only is it the resting place of the world-renowned wreck SS President Coolidge, it’s also a stunning tropical getaway. Take time out from the hustle and bustle of modern life and enjoy the peace and quiet of this gorgeous island.
Despite the island’s size, you will find two very different terrains. Along the western side of the island is a rugged landscape of mountains, while the south and east are flat, fertile and filled with agriculture. This rugged landscape carries on under the sea, creating a marine terrain of caverns and caves. To the north is Vanuatu’s first national park, Vathe Conservation Area which provides a jungle sanctuary for the islands diverse variety of endemic species inclusive of birds, butterflies, wild orchids, flying foxes and reptiles.
The island of Santo played an essential role during WWII as it provided a base in the South Pacific for over 100,000 allied troops and support staff. This massive occupation of the island is still very evident today, with a prevalence of historic sites and abandoned equipment both above and below sea level.
Luganville, the island’s capital, is just busy enough to give you a small variety of hotel bars and restaurants to enjoy during your stay. Whether you’re after a luxury getaway or budget dive lodgings, you will be sure to find accommodation to suit you close by to the township.
A tropical beachside resort located on the site of an old WW2 American small boat base, Beachfront Resort is set on 6 acres of land. With 150 metres of absolute waterfront lawns and gardens, Luganville’s only true beach resort is located just 2 kilometres from the town centre and 15 minutes from the international airport.
The resort is far enough out from town to avoid the noise but near enough for that early morning adventure trip, or adrenaline-pumping scuba dive on the SS President Coolidge.
With direct Air Vanuatu service from Brisbane and at least three daily domestic flights from Port Vila, it’s never been easier to get to this northern paradise.
Beachfront Resort offers 27 rooms overlooking the sheltered waters of Segond Channel and Aore Island. The resort welcomes families and children with plenty of space for the kids to safely run free and have fun. Groups of divers are also well catered for.
The fully licensed restaurant, The Coolidge Bar & Grill, provides first-class all-day dining from both the regular and superb blackboard menus together with a selection of cold, local and imported beers plus wines from Australia and around the world. All of this can be enjoyed in relaxed Melanesian-style surroundings overlooking the swimming pool, extensive lawns, colourful tropical gardens and tranquil waters of the South Pacific ocean.

Start your diving day at Pacific Dive Headquarters, located at The Espiritu Hotel on Main Street in Luganville. You will meet your dive guides here, and they will assist you with any required hire equipment. You will then be briefed on the dive site of the day and complete any necessary paperwork before being transported to the dive site. Single Dive tours run for approximately 4 hours.
Once at the Dive Site, kit up and enter the beautifully warm and clear water. Your experienced Dive Guide will escort you on one of the most amazing dives you have ever done! Whether it be the SS President Coolidge or Million Dollar Point, you will explore the site at your pace, and no doubt make some life-changing memories!
