Espiritu Santo (commonly known as ‘Santo’) is arguably one of the most well-known dive destinations in the South Pacific. Not only is it the resting place of the world-renowned wreck SS President Coolidge, it’s also a stunning tropical getaway. Take time out from the hustle and bustle of modern life and enjoy the peace and quiet of this gorgeous island.
Despite the island’s size, you will find two very different terrains. Along the western side of the island is a rugged landscape of mountains, while the south and east are flat, fertile and filled with agriculture. This rugged landscape carries on under the sea, creating a marine terrain of caverns and caves. To the north is Vanuatu’s first national park, Vathe Conservation Area which provides a jungle sanctuary for the islands diverse variety of endemic species inclusive of birds, butterflies, wild orchids, flying foxes and reptiles.
The island of Santo played an essential role during WWII as it provided a base in the South Pacific for over 100,000 allied troops and support staff. This massive occupation of the island is still very evident today, with a prevalence of historic sites and abandoned equipment both above and below sea level.
Luganville, the island’s capital, is just busy enough to give you a small variety of hotel bars and restaurants to enjoy during your stay. Whether you’re after a luxury getaway or budget dive lodgings, you will be sure to find accommodation to suit you close by to the township.
Pacific Dive is located on the tropical island of Espiritu Santo, the largest of 83 islands in Vanuatu. Home to the world-famous SS President Coolidge wreck. The largest and most accessible shipwreck in the world!

Start your diving day at Pacific Dive Headquarters, located at The Espiritu Hotel on Main Street in Luganville. You will meet your dive guides here, and they will assist you with any required hire equipment. You will then be briefed on the dive site of the day and complete any necessary paperwork before being transported to the dive site. Single Dive tours run for approximately 4 hours.
Once at the Dive Site, kit up and enter the beautifully warm and clear water. Your experienced Dive Guide will escort you on one of the most amazing dives you have ever done! Whether it be the SS President Coolidge or Million Dollar Point, you will explore the site at your pace, and no doubt make some life-changing memories!
Don’t forget to bring your GoPro or Underwater Camera to capture these unforgettable experiences and show off to friends and family back on the surface.
The Espiritu Hotel is a centrally located, boutique hotel, just minutes away from the cafes, shops and other services of Luganville. The refurbished hotel offers 13 modern and contemporary rooms and a convenient car rental service to reflect a home away from home on Espiritu Santo.
All types of travellers – from divers, couples and families to groups and even longer term stays – can be comfortably accommodated at The Espiritu Hotel. Tu Café and Restaurant offers fresh and tasty modern cuisine utilising the locally grown, organic produce that Vanuatu is famous for. Guests may choose to sit in the restaurant’s indoor or outdoor dining area. The Tu Bar and Lounge boasts a fully stocked bar and a 55” flat screen TV. The lounge area incorporates the pool side, hammocks and comfy couches.
Pacific Dive is located on the hotel premises, making The Espiritu a perfect base from which to dive the SS President Coolidge and to also explore the island. The hotel also features a miniature World War II Museum.
