Beqa Island

Fiji

Navigate

Overview

Beqa Island lies just 10 kilometres off the south coast of the main island of Viti Levu. The fringing reef around the island and the barrier reef around Beqa Lagoon is one of Fiji’s premier diving and snorkelling locations.

A stay on Beqa Island will give you a glimpse into the traditional Melanesian way of life in a natural, unspoiled environment untouched by mass tourism or modern developments. Here you’ll experience a greater sense of true Fijian hospitality, genuine warmth and local, rural village life.

Beqa Island is an ideal option for those wanting to make the most of their diving time in Fiji without taking a domestic flight to the outer islands while experiencing Fijian island life.

Beqa Island has a tropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons. The average temperature is always high and relatively consistent, ranging from 23°C to 28°C throughout the year.

Wet Season: December to April

This is the hot, humid season with daytime temperatures averaging 29°C. December can be quite windy, and March is the month with the most amount of rainfall, generally in the form of afternoon downpours. This time of year has also been known to experience tropical cyclones.

Dry Season: May to November

This is the cooler season when the humidity drops off a little bit, and the wind picks up. Expect average daytime temperatures of 26°C and up to 8 hours of sunshine per day. The best months to visit are from mid-May to mid-October, with July being the driest and coolest month.

Diving

Overview

Beqa has over 100 dive sites, most within a twenty-minute boat ride from the resorts. These include two shipwrecks and the world-famous Beqa Lagoon Shark Dive.

It is home to radiant reefs that support a vast array of marine life, from gorgeous corals to massive Tiger and Bull sharks. Other critters you’re likely to encounter are Blue Ribbon Eels, Lionfish, Leaf Scorpions and Clown Triggers.

The water is clear and warm, and visibility is typically between 20-30 metres. The currents are mostly gentle, which makes the diving suitable for beginner to intermediate divers.

Wet Season: 28°C – boardies and a rashie, or a 3mm wetsuit.

Dry Season: 26°C –  5mm wetsuit is recommended.

Dive Season

Diving in Beqa Lagoon is conducted year-round, but the conditions will vary depending on the season.

July to September usually has the best visibility, and surface conditions can be rougher between November and January due to high winds.

For the shark encounters, Bull Shark interaction may be lower during the mating season of November and December. However, most of the sharks are in the area throughout the year.

Dive Highlights

Shark Diving

Descend onto the perimeter of the reef and get ready to witness nature at its finest.

Excitement is in the air, and the anticipation is palpable as sharks, hundreds of jacks, snappers, the occasional massive Queensland grouper, humphead wrasse, and other incredible marine life can all be seen circling the dive site.

Feeders settle around the reef, and then the real spectacle begins. Tawny Nurse sharks, Lemon sharks, Bull sharks and Tiger sharks purposefully move towards the feeders, opening their massive jaws to pluck food from their outstretched hands in direct view of divers.

This is an unmissable, unforgettable diving experience that will keep you coming back time and time again.

Activities

Hiking

Beqa Island boasts footpaths and trails that have crisscrossed between villages for hundreds of years. The trails are safe and easy to navigate alone, as a group, or as part of a guided tour. Walking is one of the best ways to see the island; it gives you the opportunity to appreciate its true beauty and all that it has to offer.

Culture

Fijian culture and traditions passed down through the generations are very much alive and practiсed today.

Watch stories of old told through captivating dance and song, or witness the ancient practice of walking across red-hot coals. Join a class that teaches you how to weave coconut leaves into practical everyday items, or learn how to cook a traditional Fijian dish that will tantalise the tastebuds.

Surfing

Take a trip down to the coast to ride the world-class waves of Frigates Pass. Also known as the Fiji Pipeline, this left-hand break is reasonably unknown, uncrowded, and is one of the most consistent breaks that Fiji has to offer.

Surfers should be very experienced and will need to bring along their own boards, and a repair kit is highly suggested.
