Overview

“The Socorro Islands, officially known as the Revillagigedo Archipelago, is a group of four, volcanic, islands located in the Pacific Ocean about 400km off the coast of the southern tip of Baja California; a south western state of Mexico. The journey to the islands can take up to 24 hours by boat, departing from Cabo San Lucas and diving here can only be experienced here by liveaboard. These isolated and uninhabited islands have been compared to the Galapagos Islands and Cocos Island because of regular encounters with over 7 species of sharks, giant mantas, humpback whales, tuna and dolphins”.

You will experience a sub-tropical climate. Only open to visitors between November and May. The average temperature from January to April is 15°C, and in November, December, and May it’s 20°C. – 26°C.

Diving

Overview

Throughout the season you can expect to dive in crystal clear waters alive with Giant Pacific Mantas, wild Bottlenose Dolphins, giant Tuna, Wahoo, enormous schools of Jacks, Turtles, & Hammerhead & Silky Sharks that are attracted to the area for its flourishing volumes of mackerel and plankton. During mid Jan to mid April you can expect to encounter Humpback Whales and in Nov-Dec & late April- June, whale sharks are also prominent. The sheer range of pelagic species residing in these waters makes it sit high on many divers bucket lists. This pelagic hotspot is suitable only for experienced divers who won’t mind jumping into cooler waters up to 4 times a day. Sea conditions can change quickly and be quite rough at times”.

Dive Highlights

San Benedicto Island

There are a few dive spots here. Visit sheltered pinnacles full of lobsters, eels and fish, with the occasional shark cruising by. Go to the cleaning station and witness giant Pacific manta glide through the water. And visit a canyon known for being a favourite hangout for dolphins, hammerheads and silky's.

Roca Partida

A huge standalone pinnacle, which seems bottomless as it plunges to the depths. It is a magnet for life, expect the opportunity to see every pelagic species Socorro has to offer here. Also known for groups of sleeping sharks resting in one of the small caves carved into the stone.

Cabo Pearce

A well-known dolphin hangout off Socorro Island. Dolphins can be notoriously friendly here, often swimming right up to divers to check them out.
