Overview

Full of natural wonder, sweeping landscapes and incredible biodiversity, Papua New Guinea is the ideal remote island destination.

It contains the most significant swathe of continuous rainforest beyond the Amazon, with the Sepic River lowlands to the north and the Owen Stanley mountain range, running from east to west across the country, soaring sharply up from the fertile coastal lowlands, floodplain regions and mangrove swamps. Spectacular coral reefs hug all coastlines.

With over 800 indigenous languages and local customs, traditions, beliefs and ceremonies being handed down by word of mouth from the older generation to the youth, PNG is extensively culturally diverse.

Get ready for the trip of a lifetime! A visit to Papua New Guinea will take you on a million different journeys.

Snapshot

Warm to hot and humid throughout the year. The rainy season varies from province to province; however, in general, it is driest from May to December. The temperature remains consistent throughout the year in the lowlands, with the daily average sitting at 30°C and falling to 22°C overnight.
In the highlands, temperatures drop as low as 14°C at night.
In Port Moresby, the wet season is December to April and the dry season is from May to November.

We recommend taking light, casual clothing. However, please be aware that the country’s culture and religion call for a more conservative dress code. Please consider this if you are planning on participating in above-water activities.

Diving

Overview

The coast of Papua New Guinea is home to some of the world’s most spectacular diving – dubbed as the “underwater photographer’s paradise”- with many international award-winning photos being taken in PNG waters. Exotic and still vastly unexplored, the thousands of coral atolls with their crystal clear blue waters abound in a myriad of spectacular marine life.

Explore a vast assortment of dive sites ranging from magnificent wrecks to beautiful barrier reefs. Visit colourful coral gardens, daring drop-offs along coral walls, perfect patch reefs, fabulous fringing reefs, serene seagrass beds and amazing atolls.

The main destinations for scuba diving are New Britain Province (Rabaul and KImbe Bay), New Ireland Province (Kavieng), Milne Bay, Tufi and Madang. Papua New Guinea is also home to several liveaboard dive vessels that conduct diving expeditions to the more remote diving, wreck and snorkelling sites.

Milne Bay

This area is known for its marvellous muck diving, dramatic drop-offs, walls and overhangs. Drift diving, breathtaking reefs, elephant ear sponges and the manta rays that visit in September

Rabaul

If you are after some phenomenal wreck diving, this is the place to be, with Georges Wreck and Italy Maru being some of the best in the area. Diving in this area wouldn’t be complete without a visit to The Lighthouse. With its resident school of double-headed maori wrasse and Pigme Point where you can see the pigmy seahorses in their element,
