Located 2600km off the coast of Western Australia, Christmas Island is a dog-shaped speck in the middle of the Indian Ocean. A sea cliff dominates the 80km coastline, only broken up by small sand and coral beaches with shallow bays. A narrow coral reef rings the island, with a steep drop-off 200m from the shore.
Christmas Island is the epitome of ‘where the forest meets the sea’. The northern tip of the island is the only inhabited area, and Flying Fish Cove is the main settlement. The rest of the island is the Christmas Island National Park – a rich, lush swathe of rainforest sweeping down towards the sea. Living in this rainforest is an array of endemic species including the Christmas Island Flying Fox, Christmas Frigatebird, the critically endangered Blue Tailed Skink, and the renowned Christmas Island Red Crab.
The Red Crab Migration is a phenomenal annual event that sees millions of red crabs leave their forest homes with the first rains of the wet season and make their way with gusto towards the ocean to mate and spawn.
Dive along pristine reefs supporting over 88 species of coral and 650 different kinds of fish life. From the smallest shrimp to the biggest fish in the ocean, Christmas Island has something special to offer all divers.
Diving around Christmas Island is a unique experience. Along the coastline, you won’t find many white, sandy beaches, but instead steep, jagged limestone cliffs with dense jungles growing above. It’s these cliffs that extend downwards into the depths of the oceans making for fantastic wall dives.
Extra Divers Christmas Island provides boat dives year-round (weather-dependent) both in the morning and afternoon. For those that love night diving, you also have the chance to go out on occasion for night dives in and around the Cove. Scuba divers depart for a two-tank dive aboard the 10.5-meter boat for up to 16 people incl. crew and guides. The dive boat is equipped with a toilet and all necessary safety standards. Snacks and drinking water are available on board.
The generously designed Extra Divers centre is a SSI and PADI facility and is managed professionally by an experienced team.
Diving on Christmas Island is still in its infancy, so there are many places left to jump in and explore. Extra Divers believes that there are still many dive sites to explore.
Many of the dive locations around Christmas Island are huge drop-offs, measuring hundreds of meters deep, that are speckled with gorgeous sea fans and soft corals, and hide many overhangs. Other locations around the island are gentle slopes dotted with coral bommies and massive table corals, offering perfect shelter for several small species of reef fish. Some of these reef fish are endemic to Christmas Island, such as the 11 different hybrid fish that have come about by interbreeding between similar fish who couldn’t find suitable partners.
In the blue waters, there is always a chance to see the larger pelagic life, such as tuna, barracudas, giant trevallies and sharks. During the wet season, when the phenomenal red crab migration and spawning take place on land, the renowned whale sharks also appear along the coastal waters. On rare occasions, divers have also spotted manta rays and mola molas. Many of the dive sites, like The Cemetery, Chicken Farm, North West Point, and The Morgue, attract a couple of white-tip and grey reef sharks that are not shy around divers.
Additionally, Christmas Island’s underwater landscape also provides astonishing overhangs, caverns and sea caves. Some dive sites, such as Thunder Cliff and Thunder Dome, are a great mix of mysterious dark caverns and gorgeous outer reefs, which makes for an exciting combination in one dive. Divers can even surface inside the dome to view stalactites hanging from the ceilings.
