Tanna is one of the most remarkable islands in the Pacific Ocean. It’s a mix of stunning natural beauty and rich traditional island culture.
The Tannese people still maintain a traditional Pacific Island lifestyle which keeps the ancient customs of their ancestors alive. To preserve their life and culture, some villages even restrict exposure to modern technology. If you visit such a settlement, you will find vibrant and welcoming people wearing traditional nambas and grass skirts. Although there are roads on the island, you will find that most locals get around on foot or horseback. This deep-set traditionalism is rooted in a ‘Cargo Cult’ in which an American named ‘John Crum’ is the focus. The belief is that if Tannese people maintain their ‘kastom’ beliefs and life, their American messiah will return with western riches.
Tanna’s coastline varies from gorgeous deep blue rock pools, and volcanic black-sand beaches. It could be said that due to the maintenance of the traditional lifestyles and customs on Tanna, and the minimal human impact this has, the surrounding reefs are teeming with life. Tanna is renowned for its stunning snorkelling sites, making it an ideal destination for divers and non-divers alike.
Set back from the stunning coastline, you will find a backdrop of luscious tropical jungle, dotted with beautiful streams and waterfalls. Dominating this gorgeous landscape is the world’s most accessible active volcano, Mount Yasur. This active volcano is at the root of the island’s natural beauty, providing rich fertile soil for Vanuatu’s most delicious produce.
Tanna Island lies in the blue waters of the South Pacific and is one of the southernmost islands of the Vanuatu archipelago. Stunning White Grass Ocean Resort & Spa is a haven for even the weariest traveller, as a guest can stay in this idyllic location to laze away many hours under a shady palm or take a dip in the sea.
Alternatively, there are a vast array of activities at your disposal – from visiting mighty Yasur volcano which seethes and belches at 15-30 minute intervals, to being welcomed into custom villages, fishing, diving or snorkelling on the pristine reef, to name just a few.
Upon landing at Tanna Airport following a short flight from Port Vila, a smiling staff member will assist you in the collection of your luggage and then drive you the 2km to your destination. At this point, most guests get an inkling of the pleasures that this lovely, four-star, boutique resort has to offer.
There are 20 private beachfront bungalows decorated in traditional Melanesian style and surrounded by beautifully manicured tropical gardens. All bungalows have an en-suite bathroom with a hot water shower and 24 hour electricity, mosquito canopied beds and cool tiled floors, ceiling fans, tea and coffee making facilities, mini refrigerator, screened windows, private verandahs and spectacular ocean views.
The resort’s goal has been to open the world class snorkelling reefs of Tanna, Vanuatu to the diving world. On offer is an unspoiled, untouched and unbelievable aquatic experience. The Volcanic Island of Tanna has virtually nil fresh-water runoff; therefore it offers unmatched visibility and dramatic marine landscapes, including caves, reef walls, amazing swim throughs and caverns, and a myriad of creatures and critters. Green Sea Turtles and the resident Dugong are big attractions. Macro lovers will love the little critters’ which abound at several of the sites. White Grass Ocean Resort & Spa has always been famous for some of the best snorkelling in Vanuatu and has now introduced great scuba diving sites.
