Your own private island stay
Gizo has some of the best and most exciting diving in the world from WWII wrecks to reefs that have some of the highest fish counts in the world. The area's remoteness and minimal human impact have caused the marine environment around Gizo to flourish, creating lush underwater coral gardens teaming with life. Its WWII history provides some exciting wreck dive sites (the Toa Maru being the most well-known) alongside these stunning reef walls and coral formations. These offer the perfect home for a whole range of sea-life, including rays, turtles and a multitude of colourful reef fish. Dives are done from boats with dive sites just a short journey from shore. | ORAVAE COTTAGE is an open-plan wooden bungalow perched on the edge of an islet 20 minutes from the main island of Gizo. Escape to Oravae Cottage on your own private island and leave the rat race well and truly behind. With the addition of the overwater Penthouse bungalow and a separate Treehouse nestled on stilts above the water's edge, Oravae Cottage can accommodate a party of up to 10 guests with shared bathroom facilities. So whether you're after a romantic getaway for two, a family getaway or an escape from reality with close friends you'll find the perfect, private, "Robinson Crusoe" type escape at Oravae.

    Destination Information

    Gizo

Gizo is a tropical island of sparkling lagoons, crystal clear waters and palm-fringed beaches. You will find no shortage of activities departing from this stunning volcanic island. You can go snorkelling, kayaking, paddle boarding, biking, surfing, trekking and of course scuba diving.

Gizo’s history is an interesting one. The island was taken over by the central government after surrounding island tribes joined together to obliterate the Gizo’s native tribe, who had a reputation and history of barbaric headhunting practices. This then allowed land and property to be easily obtained by non-traditional landowners, subsequently leading to Gizo becoming the hub of the Western Province. During WWII this hub was occupied by Japanese forces to provide them with a base in the South Pacific, leading to several wrecks being located in this region.

    Dive Gizo

Dive Gizo offers exciting diving just minutes from Gizo. Opened in 1985 by Danny and Kerrie Kennedy, Dive Gizo maintains the standards of excellence in diving, while making every trip exciting and relaxing. Dive Gizo is the only PADI Dive Facility in Gizo and has on staff a full-time PADI Instructor. So whether you are ready to try diving for the first time, or a seasoned veteran, Dive Gizo will cater to your needs.

Gizo has some of the best and most exciting diving in the world from WWII wrecks to reefs that have some of the highest fish counts in the world. You will surely find something new and exciting under the surface. Each dive is led by a local trained and experienced guide, and in small groups of 4-6 people, no crowded boats, no tight time schedules!

The waters around Gizo are sheltered from the sea, and generally calm. For this reason, 7 metre covered ray boats are operated enabling individual needs and schedules to be catered for. A feature of the dive day is the picnic lunch provided in between dives on on one of Gizo’s gorgeous deserted islands, with time to snorkel, relax or explore the islands. For the non-diver, Dive Gizo also conducts many WWII tours, bird tours, snorkeling, surf drops, and village tours.

    Oravae Cottage

Have you ever dreamed of escaping to your own private island? Leave the rat race well and truly behind at Oravae Cottage – your own Robinson Crusoe style bungalow in the heart of the Pacific. Perched on the edge of an islet 20 minutes from the mainland, there’s nothing to distract you here but the gentle sound of waves.

Spend your days relaxing on the wooden verandah, swimming pristine lagoons, diving or snorkelling WWII Japanese war relics, feasting on traditional island banquets or sinking an ice-cold beer and watching the sun go down as the rest of the world becomes nonexistent.

Oravae Cottage is an open-plan wooden bungalow built from local supplies. The highlight, undoubtedly, is the over-water verandah that leads right out over a beautiful blue lagoon, complete with hammocks and deck chairs.
The Penthouse is an overwater bungalow adjacent to Oravae Cottage. It has a double bed, indoor toilet and outside shower, and a vast wooden deck perfectly positioned to catch the sea breezes across the lagoon.
The Treehouse is nestled in the trees on stilts right on the water’s edge. It has two wooden decks, the main one having direct views of the impressive Kolombangara Volcano, one double bed, and bathroom facilities are shared with the Cottage and Penthouse.

Tasty meals are planned and prepared on the island by your welcoming hosts and delivered to the cottage at meal times. Soft drinks and beer can be ordered in advance of your stay and are payable on arrival. Other amenities include gas lighting, fridge and stove; cutlery and kitchen supplies; tea and coffee; linen and towels; traditional canoe and a selection of inflatables to float your day away.

Whether you’re after a romantic getaway for two or somewhere for a party of 10, Oravae is the perfect escape.
